The first European woodcut printing on paper in the early 15th century was used for printing religious images and playing cards. Some individual prints with two images on one sheet were folded and bound into books called “block books”. These early prints were sold to pilgrims in the early 1400’s. The ink for these early prints was sometimes made of lampblack (soot from oil lamps) mixed with varnish or boiled linseed oil. More

Trimmed to the platemark 15.2" x 10.9" — 38.5 x 27.7 cm.

Christ is shown with his hands raised as if rejecting the cup rather than a prayerful pose while Peter, James and John are slumbering, the soldiers are entering the gate in the background.

The painting depicts the moment when the resurrected but incognito Jesus, reveals himself to two of his disciples (presumed to be Luke and Cleopas) in the town of Emmaus, only to soon vanish from their sight.

Richard Cosway RA (5 November 1742 – 4 July 1821) was a leading English portrait painter of the Regency era, noted for his miniatures. His wife was the Italian-born painter Maria Cosway. He painted the future King George IV in 1780 and was appointed Painter to the Prince of Wales.  in 1785—the only time this title was ever awarded. His subjects included the Prince's first wife, Maria Anne Fitzherbert, and various English and French aristocrats, including Madame du Barry, mistress of King Louis XV of France.

From 1995 to 1996, the National Portrait Gallery in London held an exhibition entitled Richard and Maria Cosway: Regency Artists of Taste and Fashion, with 250 works on display. More
